People Like Us Can Make a Difference…

…writes Pema Choedroen in her inspiring book “No Time To Lose, A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva” published by Shambhala in 2005. The book is a commentary on the “Bodhicharyavatara” by Shantideva, an 8th century student monk at Nalanda, the largest Buddhist seminary of its day in India. Inspired by Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Shantideva went to Nalanda, where he gained a reputation for the three realizations of eating, sleeping and shitting. Challenged to present his ideas while sitting on the monastery’s throne he rose to the daunting prospect and produced the ten chapters of the “Way of the Bodhisattva” a book much taught and studied by the legendary teacher nomad Patrul Rinpoche in the 19th century. The book deals with the subject of bodhicitta, the awakened heart, and is lovingly commented on by Pema Choedroen. A lovely read with much wisdom and compassion within its covers.
