China and India hold the balance…

…says the Worldwatch Institute in their new “State of the World 2006” report just released. The think tank says that the current rate of economic expansion in the two countries is not sustainable at the present rate as it puts increasing pressure on the world’s resources. With record rates of consumption in the western world, there is an urgent need to use more efficient technologies and to encourage good stewardship. More investment in renewable energy sources is required, as well as a change in attitude that moves towards quality rather than quantity. On the positive side leaders in China and India are becoming aware of the problem and the two nations are investing more in solar power, public transport and other environmentally friendly technologies. More cooperation is needed between China, India and the west on issues that affect all our futures.
