Banning the burqa…

…is being seriously proposed by Dutch MPs. This proposal will only affect about 50 women in the Netherlands at the moment, so it is a rather blatant abuse of human rights in a country rapidly losing its reputation for tolerance. “Should the state dictate what you wear?” asks Mark Mardell of the BBC. We ask “What about Black Peter, Holland’s annual racist jibe? Will they also finally make him illegal?” Maybe Dutch MPs should read the latest Human Rights Watch report. Maybe they should move the International Court of Justice in the Hague to a neutral unbiased country.
