Golden Bearlin…

…Jasmila Zbanic won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale tonight for “Grbavica”, a film about post-war trauma in Bosnia and the systematic rape of Bosnian women by Serbian soldiers. The film is about a single mother and her 12-year-old daughter coping with the aftermath of the war. “A Soap” helped, as we thought it might, Denmark’s international rehabilitation by getting silver, as did “Offside” about women’s rights in Iran.

All three films make a political statement. The winner about a war past in Bosnia, “A Soap” being Danish will inevitably be seen as a statement on the Cartoon Wars, while Iran could be the war to come. Let’s hope we are wrong on that one. With at least ten dead in Benghazi after Italian anti-immigration Reform Minister (resigned) Roberto Calderoli wore a T-shirt showing the cartoons, will these stupid pictures go down as some of the deadliest art in history? Cartoon Wars death toll to date 28 and rising.
