Clowns and pirates do bank job in Amsterdam…

…Damrak 8am, Sunday. Over fifty activists, clowns and pirates bust open a bank on the Damrak in Amsterdam ten years after it closed for business. The empty building was squatted in protest at the closure of a number of alternative and cultural squats such the Africa. Its prominent location near the Central Station on the main tourist street makes it a super protest venue. After a traditional pancake and coffee breakfast the activists set off and quickly broke in and occupied the building. There was a mood of celebration and solidarity and a good time was had by all. The Flying Spaghetti Monster must be proud of us all. We’ve been having a fun few days in Amsterdam visiting old friends and enjoying the alternative sights. Last night we slept in another squat occupation to help some friends keep an old house where they are organizing an art project in a 17th century house about some local history. It’s all about two rich old ladies. For squat updates check out squat.net
